Professionally clean your jewelry before you go.
Make sure you have your jewelry professionally cleaned before you get it appraised. I didn't. I went to another appraiser who worked out of a jewelry store, he cleaned my ring and the appraisal increased by 3,600. dollars. Neil may have been fair in his appraisal but this taught me a good lesson.
